It was worn by Mr. Walter Joseph Sylvia born in Cordsville, South Carolina in 1874 and worked as a brakeman for Southern Railways where he lost his leg in a rail accident in 1905. Mr.Tylee was reportedly very mobile using only this artificial leg and a cane until his death in 1937. The creator, the Hanger Company was founded by James Edwards Hanger who at age eighteen was the first amputee during the Civil War. Due to losing his own limb he was prompted to construct the "Hanger Leg".
