MEDICA MUSC Electronic Documents Initiative and Collected Archives. Introduction: The Process: The academic health science library at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) has formed a partnership with the Waring Historical Library (WHL), also at MUSC, to create MEDICA, the MUSC Electronic Documents Initiative and Collected Archives. The WHL began pursuing digitization as a means to preserve material and expose their unique collection to a wider audience. The MUSC Library found that the Waring’s efforts provided an opportunity to launch an institutional repository that will showcase faculty and student scholarship. This poster will present the concept and process for implementation for MEDICA.
In 2008, MUSC Library and Waring Historical Library joined as a partner in the Low Country Digital Library, a project at the College of Charleston and part of the larger South Carolina Digital Library. Statewide partners include Clemson, USC, College of Charleston, and dozens of smaller South Carolina institutions. MEDICA is powered by ContentDM, a content management system robust enough to accept and display a huge variety of file formats, including video, audio, PowerPoint, and more. MEDICA staff work in concert to recruit new scholarship for the IR and to digitize historical materials from the Waring Historical Library.
