I have been intimately acquainted with Capt Jos C Haskell for twenty years past--
During the war he served on my staff as adjutant first a Battalion of Artillery, & later as Adjutant of the entire Artillery force of [Longstruts/Longstreets] Corps, positions requiring a great activity & energy & power of organisation with the closest attention to & oversight of innumerable details. Capt Haskell developed in these positions qualities of mind & character which rank him in my opinion among the very best men I have ever met for any work requiring energy judgment & control of men & I am aware that, in his pursuits since the war, those qualities have been developed & have won for him an exceedingly high reputation among all who have known him. He is considered to have [illegible] superior in the specialties at which he been engaged. His standing as a gentleman & his social & moral character are also in the same high plane as his business reputation
