The Merchant Song
Monday's here and still I am the same as when I'd just begun,
My little stock has near increased in gain,
I live in hope that ere its close, I'll have a greater run,
My little stock can never be the same.
Tuesday has come, and the day is clearer than the day before,
No custome [sic] yet, what am I to do.
Shall I give up my little all, and then reclose the door,
By which my Creditors can sue,
Wensday [sic], Oh dear! no custome [sic] yet, what am I to say or think,
I cannot live with all this weight of care,
I'll end it, yes I'll end it with all speed, and that in drink,
For then to me there'll be no fear.
Thusday [sic], I live in hope, the storm [crossed out: is] [^]has broken, the sky seems clear,
May today move better than the last,
My Ship will sail, I have enough to spare,
As long as she holds to her mast.
Friday, thay [sic] say tis hangmas [sic] day, what isit to me,
I have no dread while all is clear,
My Ship is sound her men are true as seaman on the sea,
A goodly rudder by which to stear [sic].
Saturday, the port is reached, the anchors down at last,
I am at home with those I love.
No storms to trouble for all the dangers past,
My thanks ascend to God above.
Sunday, This day of rest, how sweet it is to me,
The week is past and all is bright again,
My Ship at Port, and I have crossed the stormy sea,
With Banners flying with a goodly name.
