My Beloved City
Charleston, my beloved home, I grieve for thee,
As the mother would for the loss of those she loved;
In youth, her gushing eyes no more can see,
For they are gone to Him, who gave and dwells above,
In mansions of eternal rest.
Though far from thee, yet I am looking with a tearful eye,
For some joyful news that tells the plague is hushed,
The storm is past and gone, we have a peaceful sky;
No more to overcast our city, for the monster's crushed,
By Him who dwells among the blest.
Oh God! can I not feel, though far from home and friends,
For the affliction that comes upon my house and native land.
In mercy, I pray thee, let thy loving Son, who always sends
Messengers of love, to guard and guide us to that holy land
In Heaven, where all is rest.
When all is calm again, this dreadful scourge is stayed by our God,
Let us with a joyful shout that has no bounds proclame [sic],
Hosanna to the King of Kings, our blessed and holy Lord,
The majesty of all; above, below, around, He has no name,
Save Three in One, among the blest.
Let us all with one accord give up, the rich, the poor, the great,
A day of rest to Charleston, that she may her joyful voice raise
To God, whose blessings have been felt throughout the State,
Let us all upon that day be found in thankful praise,
To Heaven, where all is rest.
