| Collection Note | The Joseph A. Towles Artifact Collection is Avery's largest collection of three-dimensional objects. Donated by the famous anthropologist Colin Turnbull, the collection is not only an important anthropological record, but also reflects the life of a bi-racial homosexual couple living in the mid- to late-20th century. The collection reflects Turnbull's extensive study of the Mbuti people in the Ituri forest of present-day Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Ik people in the mountains of Uganda, but also contains various artifacts from all over the continent of Africa. In addition, the collection holds many objects from Turnbull's and Towles' personal and investigative trips to China and India. |
